Everyone who reads books can pick a favourite one that changed their lives a little bit, or a whole lot. I have a list of numerous books that did just that for me. When I was very young, I read about one book every couple of days, and I even managed to read entire books in 24 hours or less. Some books are so well written that you just can't put them down!
I would like to present to you my favourite books of all time, and some that I have been impressed with recently. Hopefully you can look for them at your local library or bookstore, and perhaps they will touch your soul, tickle your funnybone, inspire you or just give you a beautiful escape from the mundane as they have done for me.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is my Number One all time favourite book. I read it when I was 11 years old, and I never forgot it. I remember wanting a copy so badly that I started to handwrite the book before it had to go back to the library, and I still have half of the first page memorized. This book inspired me to be a writer, and helped me realize what I wanted to be in life. I was touched with the way Hinton wrote about each of the characters, and "fell in love" with the sweet natured character, Johnny Cade. The Outsiders is about "greasers" in 1960's Tulsa, Oklahoma. It focuses on Ponyboy Curtis and his brothers Soda and Darry, as well as his friendship with Johnny and Dallas Winston. Ponyboy is 14 years old and is a very thoughtful boy, wondering why the greasers were always "jumped" and beaten up, while the Socs, or rich kids seemed to have everything. It takes a great act of courage, and a horrible tragedy to broaden Pony's scope of life, and what it all means. A book that I personally own three copies of, The Outsiders may seem to be for younger people, but adults sure can learn some wonderful things from these characters who seem as real as you or I.

Anne Of Green Gables is one of my favourite series because Anne Shirley is just the most lovable character, and she has the greatest imagination. I feel so humbled when reading these books, that maybe someday I would be as good a writer as Lucy Maud Montgomery. She tells these stories with such detail and care, it is astounding. I know that these books may be thought of as "young Adult" novels, but I think they are entertaining for people of all ages. There are six books about Anne and her family, and another series about her children. This series is a very fullfiling read, so please have a look at it.
I find it wild that Amazon.com's site has a synopsis of this book on their page that misspells Anne's name as "Ann". Boy, I know SHE would be fuming mad at that! Anne was always very keen on the spelling of her name, pointing out that 'e' on the end and thinking it 'romantic'.
Order Anne of Green Gables Today! This is an excellent memoir by Tobias Wolff. I was deeply touched by it, and wrote to the author when I had finished reading it. He promptly wrote back to me with a very nice letter, AND an autographed copy of the book:) It is one of my most prized possesions and I keep it locked up when i am not reading it:) This book was made into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio (before he became SOOOO famous) which was good, but I think nothing compares to the book.
Order This Boy's Life Jewel is a very cool singer/songwriter, but she also writes gorgeous poetry. I really really dislike poetry books with a passion, but this one looked very cool so I picked it up. I love the way Jewel paints pictures with words, and evokes many feelings of peace with the way she describes scenes. This is a smooth read, almost like you are talking to Jewel instead of reading. Definitely a poetry book not only for Jewel fans, but for people who just hate reading poetry!
I have noticed that a lot of people on Amazon's site have said they dislike the book, and that only young fans of Jewel's will like it. I think that this book has merit, and they should not be so quick to judge what they think is "true" poetry. Sometimes we can be quite snobby, artists and writer's and poets, and we don't want to let anyone inside of that. But you know, that art is a gift, and everyone is inside it, and it is available to everyone, so don't go thinking you "know it all" you poets out there. Jewel is a very interesting girl, and her writing is sweet. Weren't we all innocent once?
